William Roache, an actor in the 50 year old English soap opera Coronation Street since its first episode over 50 years ago, was first accused of and has now been charged with rape following an allegation dating back to 1967. The BBC has the story here but until the conclusion of any trial, there’s not much else to report.
Overnight UK time, The infamous Jerry Sandusky, former coach at Penn State, was found guilty of 45 of the 48 serial child sexual abuse charges against the boys he was scouting and training for the college. One of Sandusky’s children also disclosed during the course of the trial but was not put forward as a…
I found it interesting because I think the show does a good job of talking to people involved with treating kids and showing what the problem is. Starting with the conversation with a pediatrician, we learn that medical schools don’t effectively train doctors to deal with mental health issues. The risks to children they’ve been taught to deal with are external. These include viruses, broken bones from accidents, stitching cuts, etc. Today, however, the risks to kids have become much more internal. They are harming themselves due to mental health issues at rates we’ve never seen before. Doctors have not been trained to deal with those kinds of risks, and it is made clear that if you’re studying to be a pediatrician, you focus on the external risks because if a kid comes in with an internal risk, you’ll refer them to someone who specializes in mental health.
Of course, there’s a problem with that.
The Daily Mail reported the findings of an inquest today into the death of Derick Tempest, 30, who had been abused at 13 by two men. He disclosed to friends and his partner but never reported his own case to police nor his suspicions about whether two further teenagers he saw in his attackers’ company…
The issues laid out in the article below will be no surprise to anyone who’s been following along on the topic. When the Mental Health Parity Act was passed in 2008, it was left to each state to enforce it. Many have struggled with doing just that, because of a lack of available resources, uncooperative…
Sadly, Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana’s offer of free training during their “Night Out Against Child Sexual Abuse” falls on a night that I will be unavailable, but for others in Louisiana, you may want to take a look and learn a thing or two: Registration is now open for our Night Out Against Child Sexual…
I’m glad so many people are open to having a robot therapist, because as we have discussed many times, we don’t have nearly enough therapists to treat everyone who needs it, and you can’t just create more trained therapists very quickly. With good enough artificial intelligence programming, we CAN spin up more trained chat robots to meet the need. Is the programming good enough today? I don’t know. I’m guessing there is still some work to do, but at what point is it better than what we have now for so many people, which is nothing?
