If you’ve ever wondered why boys, and girls too, but that’s not the focus of this story, don’t come forward about their abuse, you could do a lot worse than read this article about a couple of former hockey players who tried to pursue justice against their abuser.
It’s not an easy read, and there’s no happy ending. But I want you to go read it and put yourself in their shoes. Not only did they live through what happened, but imagine going in front of your family, friends, complete strangers, and having to tell the story in full detail for all to hear.
I’ve been fairly open about what happened to me, in general, but I can’t imagine sharing those kinds of details with anyone. If I’m being honest with myself, I wouldn’t want anyone I know to have to listen to them, and I don’t trust anyone else enough to want to tell them.
Testifying in a court room is tremendously difficult. We should have enormous respect for anyone who does it, and we should do everything we can to support survivors facing it. There are too many stories like David Gove’s out there already.
