Sharing – When in Doubt, Show Up, by Connie Schultz

This article is about losing her brother to suicide, but I think this message speaks to all of the things we go through that cause people to not know what to say, depression, child abuse, sexual assault, etc.

I am reminded of a text message from one of my former students, sent from hundreds of miles away.

“I don’t know what to say,” he wrote, “but you always told us it’s important to show up. So, this is me, showing up. I’m sorry you lost your brother.”

The single most important thing you can do is show up. It’s not about saying the right thing, as if saying anything would make it better somehow. It’s about being there, and sitting with someone else’s pain, so that they don’t have to sit with it alone.

That’s it.
