What we see here is what we see for a lot of mental health solutions, it works for some, and doesn’t work for others. Mental health is complicated. As the article points out, if the school environment is hurting student mental health or they are living in an environment at home that does the same, mindfulness isn’t going to change that and isn’t likely to have much of an overall impact even if they engage.
It’s complicated. The solutions are going to be complicated as well. I’d like some simple mindfulness training to be “the answer” for everyone too, but it just isn’t.
On the other hand, if it helps you, keep doing it.
There’s a lot in the article, and there are more reasons than this one, but really, isn’t this enough to show that you need a wide network: “Don’t Overburden a Single Person” It’s not fair to make any one person responsible for our mental health support. We are the only one’s who can take responsibility…

It’s not easy being a therapist. It’s not easy treating patients and dealing with their peculiarities. Now, add dealing with insurance companies whose primary goal seems to be to pay the least amount possible for mental healthcare, and it makes sense to me why so many therapists drop out of insurance networks.Â
We have only recently realized that childhood trauma can change the way our brains develop, or that concussions can change our brains permanently. We are still learning the details of how that happens and in the very early stages of figuring out how to treat that.
Could living in a polluted area do something similar? Of course. Why wouldn’t we believe that? It’s another example of something we are just beginning to understand about our brains and mental health.
