Wrongly Accused Politician Awarded GBP 185,000 /USD 293,500 In Newsnight CSA Story Screwup

Lord McApline, the former Conservative politician wrongly accused on Twitter of sexual abuse in North Wales on the BBC Newsnight programme, settled with the BBC and was awarded GBP 185,000 Sterling or just under $293,500 plus legal costs. His legal team noted that it would be licence fee payers’ money funding the settlement and as such, you could say the BBC received a discount compared to the upper limit that McAlpine could have sought. The formal statements will be read in court later this month but McAlpine’s legal team has noted that Independent TeleVision (ITV) and those who libelled him on Twitter would be the next groups to be contacted.

The BBC has the story here.
