BuzzFeed recently interviewed four suicide attempt survivors in a moving video. Each spoke about the challenges they faced that led them to attempt to take their own lives, and then about the ways they’ve learned to cope since then.
“It gets better,” one of the interviewees, whose name isn’t shared, says in the video below. “You are worth life. You are worth living. You are worth breathing.”

I have to admit, that even in a situation where I feel like I’m not in much danger of COVID-19 any longer, I’m also still feeling a ton of social anxiety. I have to decide what level of comfort I have with people, and how to communicate that to other people. I thought the tips offered in the article below make a lot of sense.
You should go read the whole thing, because I think there’s a certain amount of self-awareness that is required to truly identify the early signs for depression or other struggles.
For example, I know that there are two signs for me that might mean I’m headed for some struggle with depression, and neither one of them look like sadness. First, I start to get incredibly irritated, and then, because other people irritate me, I start to withdraw and isolate.
If I look at the standard explanations and visual images we use when we talk about depression, I don’t see those signs. I’m not sitting around listening to sad music, crying, or over-eating. I’m too angry for that.
I suspect for many people their depression may not look like that either, it may look a lot more like some of the things in this article.
We struggle enough to talk about grief when someone dies. We don’t even come close to acknowledging the other things we can and should be grieving. As an abuse survivor, I still grieve for the childhood I never had, the close relationships with parents I never had, and the freedom to enjoy life that I didn’t have as a child.
In times like this, it’s important to take advantage of the opportunity that just stopped us in our tracks. It may not seem like an opportunity; probably more like a road block, but it is a chance to add another tool to our survivor tool belt. Men need to hear these stories too. We need to know that various issues stem from being sexually violated that are similar to non-male victims and yet not the same.
Most of all, we need to understand how common male rape is and that we are not alone in being victims.
That message gets lost in all of the messages about how we are supposed to be strong and not be victims far too often, even if it is the truth.
