Happy memories

I was reminded yesterday that, despite everything that went on in my childhood with the abuse, the lack of self-exteem, the depression, etc. there were actually some happy times. We went to see Miracle yesterday, the movie about the 1980 Olympic hockey team. I was 11 years old when those games were played, and I can still remember how awesome it was to watch that bunch of college kids beat the Soviets. I was also reminded that all I wanted to do after that was play hockey. Normally after hockey season was over all us neighborhood kids would switch over to baseball or other sports, but not 1980. We spent that entire summer playing roller hockey, no matter how hot it got! I think I spent at least part of every day of that summer vacation on skates, pretending to beat the Soviet team. It was my escape, my happy refuge from everything else that was going on, and I cherish every minute of it.

I’m showing all the classic signs of someone struggling with stress related disorders right now. Headaches, fatigue, jaw pain from gritting and grinding my teeth, etc. That’s not good, but at the same time, it’s something I’ve got to learn to live with. You see the stress comes not from looking for a new job,…

  • Why I Don’t Tell People I’m Struggling Either

When Laura talks about the reactions she’s afraid of getting she is 100% correct. A big part of why I hesitate often to tell people when I’m struggling, feeling incredibly anxious, depressed, or just mentally out of sorts is because I absolutely do not want to hear about how many other people are struggling worse. I already know there are a lot of people struggling. People who don’t have the resources I do, don’t have the support I do, with poor physical health issues or being a part of an underprivileged group, etc. I know, and I understand that I am privileged to have the things that I do and the tools to try and take care of myself that others do not.

And yet, my struggles are still struggles. If I am telling you about them it’s because I need someone to know. I need to be heard. I need to explain what is happening in my own head to someone who will listen to me. I am not negating anyone else’s struggle by talking about my own. Please understand when I, or someone else you know, comes to you and tells you that they are struggling with our mental health, it has likely taken all of our energy just to gather up the courage to tell anyone, so when you deflect like this it’s devastating to us. We carry these heavy, heavy, burdens with us every single day of our lives and we simply need someone to recognize them and maybe help us a little bit every now and again.

    Other People’s Ups and Downs

Recently, I had occasion to speak to two friends, on the same day. The conversations couldn’t have been any more different. One friend was celebrating some good news, while the other was struggling under the weight of health issues and needing someone to simply listen and sympathize with them. As someone who cares about both…

  1. You know, its terrible when I hear things like this, people remembering where they were when certain events happened, and I find it so sad (for me) that in 1980 when this happened – I had no clue it was going on. But my husband on the other hand (being from Minnesota) could tell you play by play – as I am sure you could.

Gee – do you know how young you are? I was graduating high school in 1980! Ha! Boy do I feel old!

I’m glad you have some happy memories, we all need those!
