Sharing – 20 therapists share things clients are ashamed to tell them that are actually common.

    ByMikeM May 5, 2021May 5, 2021 Reading Time: 1 minute

I appreciate the fact that this therapist recognizes how difficult it is to come forward with these things because it does take a lot to talk about it, especially the first time you tell someone.

At the same time I wonder how differently we might look at ourselves as we try to heal if we knew that we were the 4th or 5th person who talked to that one therapist about being sexually abused that day?

It’d be hard to feel alone, for one, right?

Sharing – Do We Even Know How To Socialize Anymore?

    ByMikeM May 4, 2021May 3, 2021 Reading Time: 1 minute

Let’s all just admit it. There are going to be a lot of us who are socially anxious going back out into the world post-vaccination. So get it out up front, and accept that it’s going to be weird.

Be gracious to everyone who is going to be re-learning how to be social again, and support them in the struggle to do so. The worst thing we could do is create a situation where people have something to be anxious about.

Sharing – Preventing Online Sexual Victimization of People with Developmental Disabilities

    ByMikeM May 3, 2021May 3, 2021 Reading Time: 1 minute

No one should be thrown into online, or offline, society without meaningful education about things like consent, what constitutes illegal behavior, the signs of grooming and so on. It’s just setting them up for failure, and victimization. Why would we do that to anyone? Or do people with intellectual and development disabilities not deserve that same consideration?

Have We Overlooked Men When Talking About Body Shaming?

    ByMikeM April 30, 2021April 29, 2021 Reading Time: 2 minutes

I’ve been lucky enough to see a couple of men talk about eating disorders, and body image, but I’ll be the first to admit, if you asked me, based on what I see and hear, if these were mostly women’s issues, I’d probably say yes. But that’s wrong. These are very much men’s issues and trans issues as well. We make jokes about dad bods and assume it’s no big deal because it’s men, and they don’t have the same problems, and hang ups, but we do. There are far more people in the world struggling with their body, and disordered eating, who aren’t included in the conversation because we assume it’s a young women’s issue.

Sharing – CVS Trial Would Provide Access To Mental Health Services

    ByMikeM April 28, 2021April 28, 2021 Reading Time: 2 minutes

There is a huge unmet need, and I hope this pilot works out, and gets expanded to places where it’s most needed. And then, I hope other innovative ideas become reality as well.

    We need them all.

Sharing – Why Adolescence Matters in Preventing Substance Abuse

    ByMikeM April 27, 2021April 27, 2021 Reading Time: 2 minutes

The reality is, even if a kid has had severe trauma in their life, there are things we can do, immediately, that can lower the chances of this trauma impacting them later in life. Things like getting them support, positive role models and experiences, and actively getting them involved in healing can make a huge difference.
