Trying to Escape an Abusive Situation, Don’t Forget About Your Tech

I posted this to my tech blog the other day and wanted to make sure that survivors were aware of it as well. If you are trying to escape from an abusive situation, be it domestic violence and otherwise, don’t trust any technology that the person you are trying to escape from had access to. It’s pretty easy for them to have set it up to track or snoop on you.

Go read the post if you, or someone you know, is thinking about leaving.

And if you have someone in your life who feels the need to use this technology to always keep tabs on you? I don’t want to get in the habit of offering relationship advice, but I have to wonder about how healthy that is.

So many survivors want the answer to that first question. They want to know when this will be over and done with, but that’s not realistic. It would be like me asking when will I be “healed” from diabetes. I won’t be. My disease is something that is part of me that I have to manage. I take medicine, I watch what I eat, I don’t drink, etc. That’s not going to end. I fully understand that there is no future version of me where I don’t have to do any of those things.

Similarly, there is no future version of me that isn’t a survivor of child abuse. It happened. There is no cure I can buy that will create a version of me where I didn’t have that experience and be shaped by it. That’s not to say that I cannot have a great life, but I will always have a life impacted by those events.

  • Report: 2009 Stop Child Abuse Rally

There were some hitches that threatened to derail the 2009 Stop Child Abuse March and Rally. Firstly, the venue switched at short notice forcing a change in destination. Secondly, part of the march route was sidelined to the pavement rather than the street, which we suspect had something to do with an Army parade later…
